At last year’s Munich Security Conference, US Vice President JD Vance stunned European leaders, accusing them of censorship, and suppressing far-right speech.
Today, Saturday, February 14, 2026, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio repeated many of the same hard-right MAGA ideas, though in a slightly less aggressive tone, warning Europe of ‘civilization erasure’.
Rubio told European leaders that the European continent ‘belongs with’ the US, as the two have ‘spiritual’ ties, while making white nationalistic references. Rubio called on Europe to join Trump’s far-right world order.
“We are bound to one another by the deepest bonds that nations could share, forged by centuries of shared history, Christian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry and the sacrifices our forefathers made together for the common civilization to which we have fallen heir.”
…
“We do not want allies to rationalize the broken status quo rather than reckon with what is necessary to fix it … We in America have no interest in being polite and orderly caretakers of the West’s managed decline.”
Rubio rehashed the US administration’s complaints on the failure of international institutions, unfettered trade and energy policies that he said are “impoverishing our people,” as well as “mass migration that threatens the cohesion of our societies.”
Rubio said the West had been appeasing ‘a climate cult’. He criticized restrictions imposed by climate policy while competitors were using fossil fuels, and opening doors to mass migration.
While the tone might have been different from last year’s speech, the substance of the message out of Washington has not changed.
